The New Land Registry

THE HELLENIC NATIONAL CADASTRE (ETHNIKO KTIMATOLOGIO)

Anybody who owns property in Greece is now required to declare it in the new National Cadastre.

The New Land Registry in Greece is now a reality, potentially solving any property issues and claims of inheritance, purchase etc that could not easily be proven in the past. A new Website has been introduced at www.ktimatologio.gr where you can find more information (in Greek) on the progress of the Registration process and what you would need to do in order to register your property.

49 areas in Greece have already been added to the Registry and a further 107 were registered by December 2008. Residents of Greece had until the 31st of October 2008 to submit their paperwork. Residents of other countries were required to register their properties by the 30th of December 2008. If you live in Australia and own property in one of the 156 areas processed, you should have registered it already, or else you should take urgent steps to register this property as soon as possible.  Applications can still being taken, however a fine may be imposed depending on your personal circumstances.

Submissions can be sent in two ways:

1. Send a Special Power of Attorney document, signed in the presence of a Greek Consulate Official, to your proxy (friend/relative/lawyer/architect) in Greece so that they can then complete the registration on your behalf.

2. Complete the forms, online or in hard copy format, and send copies of your titles to the relevant Government Department in Greece.

Metaphrase is here to help break the language barriers. If you own property in Greece, ask us how we can assist. We will be able to help you to understand and to assess your individual circumstances, translate the process as advertised in the Greek Press, determine with you whether your particular property needs to be registered, and translate all the relevant paperwork so that you can process it.

Soon the Greek Government will be announcing more properties to be introduced in the Registration Scheme. When these are available, we will be publishing the announcements on this Website. Check this page often to make sure that you don't miss the deadline for your property registration.

At Metaphrase we are the Greek and English translation and interpreting specialists in Australia. Please contact us on 1300 664 988 or e-mail your query to info@greektranslations.com.au.
